What Causes Flat Feet?

Flat feet can be present from birth or develop over time due to several different factors:

Genetics – Some Individuals are born with flat feet. If a parent has flat feet, their children may also have a higher likelihood of developing flat feet.

Developmental Issues – In children, the arch may fail to develop properly.

Ageing- As people age, the tendons and ligaments that support the arches of the feet can weaken which leads to a gradual collapse of the arch.

Injury – Trauma to the foot or ankle, such as fractures, tendon damage or ligament tears can disrupt the structure of the arch causing it to flatten.

Obesity – Excess body weight puts additional strain on the feet which can weaken the arches over time.

Prolonged stress on the feet – Activities such as prolonged standing, walking or running especially in unsupportive footwear can overstretch or weaken the tendons and ligaments of the feet, causing the arches to collapse.

Symptoms Of Flat Feet

Pain – in the feet, particularly in the arch or heel

Swelling – Swelling along the inner side of the foot

Difficulty with movement- Trouble with activities such as walking or running.

Fatigue – Tiredness in the feet after prolonged periods of standing or walking.

Potential Complications Of Flat Feet

Overpronation – Excessive inward rolling of the foot which can lead to knee, hip and back problems.

Achilles Tendonitis – Inflammation of the tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.

Plantar Fasciitis – Inflammation of the plantar fascia, the band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot.

Bunions and Hammertoes – Deformities that can develop due to altered foot mechanics.

Flat feet don’t always cause problems, however when you have symptoms of pain in your feet, ankles or lower legs, it is important to seek an evaluation from a Podiatrist.
