Corns and Calluses
What are corns and calluses?
A callus is a part of the skin, commonly on the feet, that has become toughened due to friction or pressure to the area. They’re yellowish in colour and feel lumpy to touch.
A corn is a type of callus, made of dead skin. They are usually painful and form on the top or the side of the toes and are small, circular and with a clearly defined centre.
The causes of corns and calluses
Our clinic has seen a wide range of corns and calluses, yet the most common risk factors for developing them are;
- Ill-fitting socks or shoes
- Repeated actions such as jogging or walking in a certain way
- Walking barefoot regularly
- Older age
- Pressure or friction on the skin
- High-heeled shoes
- Bunions, hammertoes and other foot problems
- Steel cap work boots
