The term “Growing Pains” is a general term that describes many different conditions that affect the lower limb. They can affect anyone from the age of about 3 years old to adolescence.
This will often be after having spent a lot of time walking around, after school or after playing lots of sports.
Growing pains present as aching pain in the muscles of their legs, knees or feet. It usually occurs in both legs, at night and may even wake the child from their sleep and is equally common in both girls and boys.
Symptoms
It is important to note, even though the child may be in pain, there is no damage to the bones, joints or muscles occurring. Symptoms of growing pains include:
- Muscular aches and pains are in both legs
- Moving the legs does not make the pain better or worse
- Pain comes and goes
- Pain is felt around the late afternoon and evening
- The pain is worse during the night and may even wake the child from sleep
- Pain is gone by morning
The pain should not interrupt their usual activities or be associated with other symptoms, such as swelling, redness, fever, limping, rash, loss of appetite or fatigue.
Causes
The cause of growing pains is unknown. However, overuse from running, climbing and jumping during the day is thought to be the most likely cause. The pain also may be a result of poor posture or flat feet, tight muscles and limited range of motion in joints of the foot and leg. That’s why when it comes to children’s feet, visiting your Podiatrist to check if there are any other causes for the pain is strongly advised.
Treatment for growing pains
Some methods for treating growing pains include:
- Exercise Therapy
- Footwear Advice
- Orthotics
It is important to ensure your child that the pain is not caused by running, jumping or climbing, as this may deter them from participating in usual play and childhood experiences.
