Fungal Nails are a common condition that affects toe nails. Just like other fungal infections, they’re caused when a fungus begins to overgrow the toe nail.

Symptoms

They can be easily diagnosed. If your nails show any of the following signs, you may have fungal nails:

  • Thickened nails
  • Yellow-brown discolouration
  • Brittle, or crumbly nails
  • Distorted in nail shape
  • Separation of the nail from the nail bed
  • Bad smelling nails

How to avoid fungal nails?

You can avoid them, however, that doesn’t mean they won’t come back. But there are a few things you change:

  • Avoid wearing artificial nails
  • Avoid swimming in a public swimming pool
  • Air your feet as often as possible
  • Wear open shoes where you can
  • Wash your hands after touching infected nails
  • Dry your feet well, especially between your toes after a shower
  • Avoid walking barefoot in public

How do you treat fungal nails?

Your Podiatrist may prescribe the following:

  • Low Level Laser Therapy
  • An anti-fungal topical agent
  • A hygiene plan for your feet.

It’s important to note that there can be complications from a fungal infection if left untreated.
