Diabetes is a disease that causes a person to have too much blood sugar (glucose) in their body, this is due to either lacking insulin or their body doesn’t utilise insulin well enough to regulate it.
Over a long period of time this can cause health issues, including damage to the feet.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of Diabetic feet can vary, yet some symptoms include:
- Tingling sensation
- Numbness
- Blisters or Sores (without pain)
- Temperature changes to the foot
- Foot discolouration
- Itchy-Dry Skin
- Slow Healing Wounds
- Cramps in legs and feet
What’s the result if left untreated?
If symptoms are left untreated issues can arise such as:
- Ulcers
- Infections
- Gangrene
Two main Diabetic feet problems
Diabetic Neuropathy
Diabetic Neuropathy is the lack of feeling to your feet caused by nerve damage. People suffering from this cannot feel cuts and sores which can lead to infection and pain in the feet. This is because muscle damage can result in the foot not aligning properly and incorrect pressure on the soles of your feet.
Peripheral Vascular Disease
The poor flow of blood to your feet is called Peripheral Vascular Disease. As a result, sores and cuts can take longer to heal and may become infected. Those that suffer from infection risk the development of ulcers or gangrene to the feet.
Diabetic foot care
It’s important to take special care if you suffer from diabetes. Simple routines can help to keep on top of any cuts or sores and prevent further implications. This includes:
- Follow your doctor’s nutritional and medical advice
- Wash your feet everyday
- Check your feet for sores, redness or other issues
- Never wear bare feet
- Put your feet up when you are sitting to keep good blood flow
- See a podiatrist every three months for check ups
Consult your Podiatrist if you have any concerns regarding your foot health.
