Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease which causes changes to the joints over the years. It is a chronic condition where the cartilage in the joints deteriorate gradually. Due to the shear amount of weight bearing joints, the foot is one of the most common locations for Osteoarthritis to develop.

Although damage to joints can’t be reversed, early identification and management of symptoms can slow the progression of the disease.

Early Signs and Symptoms

Those with Osteoarthritis of the foot can experience a varying degree of signs and symptoms including:

  • Pain and stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Difficulty walking
  • A bone spur at the joint
  • Blisters or calluses over its surface
  • Aching of the foot
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Grating noise when moving
  • Pain in the ball of the foot
  • Pain in the heel
  • Soreness around joints in the foot.

What Causes Osteoarthritis?

Foot Osteoarthritis can occur for many reasons including the following:

  • Sprain to the ligaments supporting the joint
  • An injury to one of the bones in that area (Fracture or broken bone)
  • Chronic inflammation of the joint
  • Repeated stress over time
  • Kicking or jamming the toe
  • Abnormal foot mechanics (Flat feet or high arches).

Management

Osteoarthritis cannot be cured, however there are many ways to manage the symptoms, improve pain and function, and slow the progression of the disease.

Your podiatrist may prescribe the following:

  • Orthotics  To improve the foot’s mechanics and minimise pain
  • Foot Mobilisation Manual Therapy to help improve range of motion in joints
  • Laser Therapy – The light triggers chemical changes that help damaged cells and tissues heal and regrow
  • Physical Therapy – Exercises to strengthen the muscles
  • Comfortable shoes – Wearing comfortable, well-fitted shoes
  • Strapping – Designed to limit movement in painful joints
  • Staying active – Exercise and maintaining a healthy weight.
