With pregnancy comes a host of issues women need to navigate due to their changing bodies. Foot pain is one of them, and unfortunately, it is not uncommon. In this blog we discuss the symptoms and treatment of foot pain during pregnancy.

Why does foot pain occur during pregnancy?

The four most common foot issues during pregnancy are:

Swollen Feet (Oedema)

Pregnant women often experience swollen feet due to excess fluid build-up (oedema) in the feet. This usually occurs in the latter part of pregnancy and is due in part to the body retaining the extra fluid.

Arch Pain (Over-Pronation)

Many pregnant women suffer from arch pain due to over-pronation (flattening of the arch) due to weight gain in pregnancy.

Ingrown Toe Nails

Due to the feet swelling and the inability to reach your toe nails later in pregnancy many women are prone to getting ingrown toe nails. This is due to the excess fluid in the toes pressing against the nail and as the nail continues to grow it has a tendency to grow into the skin.

Growing Feet

It is not uncommon for women to experience a change in foot size during pregnancy. Later in pregnancy the body releases the hormone Relaxin that allows the pelvis to open to deliver the baby. This hormone allows the ligaments in the feet to be more flexible, causing them to spread wider and longer. This spread could lead to a half size increase in the foot.

The treatment of the foot pain

The four most common foot issues can be managed during pregnancy. This is how:

Swollen Feet (oedema)

  • Elevate feet as often as possible
  • If you have to sit for long periods of time, place a small stool by your feet to elevate them
  • Stretch legs frequently to promote circulation
  • Wear wide, comfortable shoes
  • Wear seamless socks
  • Avoid cross legs when siting

Arch Pain (Over-Pronation)

  • Use Orthotics
  • Wear proper fitting footwear, which are supportive in the arch.
  • Stretch foot daily

Ingrown Toe Nails

  • Visit your Podiatrist regularly for nail care to prevent an ingrown arising
  • If you do have an ingrown nail your Podiatrist will be able to remove it in a safe and pain free manner

Growing Feet

  • Measure your feet several times throughout your pregnancy as your foot size may change
  • Wear shoes that are the appropriate size for your feet as they may have grown a half to one size bigger during pregnancy
  • Do not wear the same shoe size from the start of the pregnancy at the end as you may end up with foot complications
