Blisters are a painful yet common condition that can affect your walking and daily activities. However, thinking ahead can help to prevent blisters and ensure that if you do happen to suffer from them, you can promptly and effectively treat them.
Here are our top tips to prevent and treat blisters.
How to Prevent Blisters
If you are prone to blisters, here are tips to help prevent painful and uncomfortable blisters forming.
- Wear well fitted shoes. Shoes are often the main cause of blisters. Avoid shoes that rub, cramp or squeeze your feet.
- Wear good quality socks. Non-cotton socks that allow your foot to breathe are best. If you are exercising, consider wearing anti-blister socks.
- Dry feet. If your feet tend to sweat, change your socks regularly and apply either an anti-sweat spray or powder to your feet, shoes and socks to help absorb excess moisture.
- Cover up. Pad areas of the foot that is prone to blisters prior to exercise. This extra layer will help prevent blisters from forming.
- Stop. If you experience pain, discomfort or redness, stop the activity immediately, otherwise a blister may form.
How to Treat Blisters
If a blister has form, it is best to treat it immediately to avoid any infection or scarring.
- Do not pop the blister as it could lead to infection
- Loosely covered with a bandage
- Avoid pressure on the area
- Use a donut shape padding to cover the blister
- If the blister is large or painful, then in this case, seek treated by a Podiatrist.
If the blister has popped, wash the area with warm water, apply antibiotic ointment and cover it loosely with a bandage.
Keep an eye on the blister. If there are signs of redness, pus, swelling or increased pain, see a Podiatrist.
