Orthotics are shoe inserts that are prescribed by a qualified Podiatrist. The orthotics are individually designed to reposition feet into their most efficient position in order to reduce and/or remove the stress caused on lower limb muscles, ligaments and bones during both standing, walking or any weight bearing activity.
So how can orthotics help?
Some foot and lower limb issues can be successfully treated with the use of orthotics. These issues include:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Heel Pain
- Achilles Tendonitis
- Shin Splints
- Recurrent Ankle Sprains
- Knee Pain
- Hip Pain
- Lower Back Pain
- Recurrent soft tissue injuries of the leg and foot
- Foot and Leg Tendonitis
Orthotics can help a person avoid more invasive treatments, such as surgery.
How are your feet assessed?
A qualified Podiatrist will conduct a full comprehensive lower limb biomechanical assessment. These will include assessing the Foot, Ankle, Leg, Knee, Hip and Lower Back for the following:
- Joint Range of Motion
- Strength
- Structure
- Alignment
- Lesions
They will then relate their findings to the clients subjective examination that involved:
- Current symptoms
- Occupation and workplace settings
- Sports activities
- Social activities
- Footwear both work and at home
- Any other influences they may be of note
The information gathered during this detailed assessment will help formulate the individual prescription of the orthotic that will be provided.
Other treatments in addition to orthotics?
When orthotics are prescribed the Podiatrist may also prescribe other therapies as part of your treatment rehabilitation plan. Other therapies may include:
- Stretching & Strengthening Regime
- Shockwave Therapy
- Low Level Laser Therapy
- Foot Mobilisation
- Dry Needling
- Footwear Advice for both Work and Leisure
- Taping
How will my progress be monitored?
As part of your individual treatment rehabilitation plan your Podiatrist will monitor your progress at regular intervals to ensure your improvements and reduction of symptoms are maintained. Your podiatrist may make small adjustments to your plan to ensure that you’re getting the best outcomes and the quickest resolution to your lower limb issue.
