Hallux Abducto Valgus, more commonly referred to as a bunion, is a bump that develops on the joint at the base of your big toe. It forms when your big toe pushes against your next toe, forcing the joint of your big toe to get bigger and to stick out. The skin over the bunion might be red and sore.

What causes a bunion?

There are many factors that contribute to the development of a bunion. Many medical scientists believe people inherit the bone structure that causes the bunion to develop. Hence the notion that bunions run in the family.

Other factors that may add to the risk of a bunion growing include:

  • Overpronation which means having a low arch or uneven weight-bearing in the foot and tendon that makes the toe joint unstable
  • hypermobility, or having a big toe bone that moves more than usual
  • foot injuries
  • types of arthritis
  • conditions that affect both the nerves and muscles
  • Deformities at birth where the feet do not develop properly

Some people suggest that high-heeled or narrow shoes promote the growth of bunions. They might aggravate already-existing bunions or cause bunions to develop in people with a genetic risk of the condition, but they do not cause bunion growth directly.

Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of a bunion include:

  • A bulging bump on the outside of the base of your big toe
  • Swelling, redness or soreness around your big toe joint
  • Corns or calluses — these often develop where the first and second toes overlap
  • Persistent or intermittent pain
  • Restricted movement of your big toe if arthritis affects the toe

Treatment of a bunion

There are numerous surgical procedures for bunions, and no one technique is best for every problem. On the other hand nonsurgical treatments relieve the pain and pressure of a bunion. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of your bunion and the amount of pain it causes. These include:

  • Foot Mobilisation Technique
  • Dry Needling
  • Low Level Laser Therapy
  • Orthotic Therapy
  • Footwear Advicehigh heels and bunions
