What causes foot odour?

Foot odour is generally a result of high amounts of perspiration and bacteria accumulation on the surface of the feet. This combination results in an unpleasant smell. However, it can be a common problem even to people with good hygiene.

How do you treat foot odour?

To reduce and rid your feet of foot odour, it’s important to follow these steps and form new habits when it comes to your feet. These include:

  • Scrub your feet with mild soap once a daily during your shower or bath.
  • Wear socks with naturally occurring fibres such as cotton and wool as they allow more ventilation for your feet compared to nylon or polyester.
  • Do not wear closed shoes without socks as this leads to an accumulation of sweat, dead skin cells, dirt, and oils, further contributing to bacterial growth.
  • Change your socks once a day or more often if it’s a hot climate.
  • Wear shoes that have breathable features, such as leather uppers or runners with mesh uppers.
  • Try to change your shoes daily.
