That is why it is important to consult a Podiatrist to get the right fit for your feet and for the type of running, you are doing. This is what to consider when searching for the perfect running shoe.

What type of running are you doing?

While there is no single running shoe that is perfect for everyone, the type of running shoe you need will vary depending on your interests. If you’re running in parks, across relatively flat surfaces or on trails and uneven ground, the shoe you will require will be very different. Here are three types of shoes for three different kinds of running.

  • The road-running shoe

These shoes are light and flexible. Less durable than everyday shoes. They are designed with cushioning to stabilise feet on flat, hard surfaces with repetitive strides.

  • The trail-running shoe

As the name suggests these shoes are designed for off-road and uneven surfaces. They have hard wearing tread for solid traction with stability, support and underfoot protection.

  • The cross-training shoes

This is usually the common gym shoe where you have more contact with the ground. They are more durable than a road-running shoe and less hard wearing tread than a trail-running shoe.

Comfort & fit

Don’t rush the purchase of new running shoes. Comfort and fit is important, however there are a few things to keep in mind when trying on running shoes:

  • Ensure you have your foot size checked every time you look for new shoes. Sizes and widths of shoes tend to change from brand to brand
  • Try on shoes at the end of the day where your foot is at its biggest as they tend to swell
  • Aim for a thumbnail’s length of extra space in the toe box for movement without rubbing
  • Bring orthotics with you if you wear them. They will impact the fit of the shoe.
