Running is a great way to keep fit in our beautiful country. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to sports clubs and fitness centres. Whether you’re a serious runner or a casual runner – maintaining good foot health will keep your feet in optimum condition. At Moreland Podiatry our Sports Podiatrists come with a wealth of experience in understanding the movement and structure of the foot and ankle. They understand how your personal gait can be optimised to prevent or recover from injury.

Common Running Injuries

Running can be punishing on your feet and can result in aches, pains and injuries. Some common running injuries include:

Plantar Fasciitis – most common cause of heel and arch pain as a result of inflammation of the long band of tissue under the foot.

Shin Splints – referring to pain felt anywhere along the shinbone from knee to ankle usually caused by sports that involve a lot of running.

Achilles Tendonitis – caused by repetitive or intense strain on the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. This tendon is used when you walk, run, jump or push up on your toes.

Stress Fractures –  is a small crack in a bone caused by overuse and repetitive activity. Most common in runners and athletes who participate in running sports such as football and soccer.

Hamstring Injuries – Are both common and painful. These are caused when the hamstrings are weak, tired or overloaded.

Sports Podiatry

Our expert Sports Podiatrists at Moreland Podiatry are able to help prevent and treat foot and ankle problems caused by running. Our Podiatrists are in a great position to assess how you are running on your feet, the type of footwear being worn and recommend an exercise regime to help prevent injury. We can determine if your leg stability and alignment is correct and what measures can be taken to improve any problems.

Often injury can be avoided by correcting any biomechanical issues or resolving imbalances early on. If you are a runner, an assessment is often a good call – especially if you are suffering frequent aches and pains after a training session.

Signs it’s time to change your Running Shoes

One of the most overlooked issues when running is your footwear. It is important to choose the right running shoes for your feet but people have a tendency to wear the ‘perfect’ pair until they are worn-out.

The truth is that most running shoes have a limited lifespan of only 500-800km. As the cushioning system of the runners starts to wear, the body begins to absorb more of the impact force and this puts additional wear and tear on joints, ligaments and tendons. The trouble with wearing your shoes until they’re worn out is that it may alter your running gait and you will start to notice aching after your usual run. This is a sign that the cushioning is worn and will ultimately lead to injury.
